Al Pacino's Inspirational Speech.
The speech takes place during half time of the football after the team has not played a good first half (immediacy). It came at good timing because it came while the player's spirits were low and minds were accepting to listen to what needed to be said. The speech was short and straight to the point (chronemics). This helped with the sucessfulness of the persuasion because the coach was able to say everything he needed to say before the team had to be back out on the field, and because it didn't draw out too long and lose the focus on the words. The guys speaking was wearing a suit while those he was speaking to had on a football uniform and he appeared to be older than the rest (physical appearance). The suit showed that he was set apart from the others and that he had some type of authority. It also showed some type of credibility. When giving the speech, Al Pacino stood while most of everyone else was sitting down; not only was he standing, but he was standing in front of the crowd (proxemics). Standing caused the focus to be on him so that the words he was saying was not in vain. The movement of Al Pacino was very subtle (kinesics). He mainly stood still but paced back and forth a little bit. Too much movement would have been a distraction and those listening may not have been able to focus on what was being said. While speaking, he used a calm tone of voice, but got loud when trying to promote excitement (haptics & paralinguistics). The speaker spoke softly when trying to reach the emotions of the listeners by talking about his life failures and how he hates to look at himself in the mirror, but he raised his voice when speaking about winning and living.
